A Community with Common Interests
Dasniel Olivera Pérez, a Doctoral Student at Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico) and Assistant Professor at Universidad de la Habana (Cuba), received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2019 in Madrid. He presented the paper "Inter-Influences in the Cuban journalistic culture in the current context of the political-professional debates on the (des) regulation of the media system" to the Post- and Neo-Authoritarian Societies Working Group.
In the article below, he tells us about the importance of feeling part of a community with common interests:
IAMCR is an organization that seeks the inclusion and plurality of academic voices globally. Its travel scholarship programme provides young researchers with access to global knowledge networks, while enabling the socialization of their novel research.
My experience at IAMCR Madrid was extraordinary. It allowed me to join a working group, to dialogue with colleagues from all continents, to identify future research projects, as well as to learn about the rich Spanish culture.
The presentation of my paper, Inter-Influences in the Cuban journalistic culture in the current context of the political-professional debates on the (des) regulation of the media system, was very useful as a preamble to the upcoming discussion of my doctoral thesis, because I could see the reception of some ideas by colleagues working on related studies.
An important moment for me was the participation in the business meeting of the Post-Socialist and Post-Authoritarian Communication Working Group, because I felt part of a community with common interests, although we live in distant geographical latitudes.
At the Conference, any problem in the general organization or food was compensated by the quality of the presentations, the socialization among colleagues and the hospitality of a city like Madrid.
