XJTLU Spanish Extended Learning Courses

Hispanic Language, Culture, and Civilization (Language Courses)

This course is addressed to anyone interested in learning Spanish pronunciation. The program of this course is adapted to Chinese learners of Spanish, starting from the basic Spanish units of pronunciation and transitioning to broader pronunciation features such as rhythm and intonation.

PARTICIPANTS

Any Spanish learner who wants to learn Spanish pronunciation basics or improve their pronunciation.

  • 20 hours (synchronous sessions)
  • July 4-15, 2022; Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:00.

CERTIFICATE

Students will receive a certificate of achievement if they complete a portfolio with activities about the course content and attend 80% of the scheduled sessions.

METHODOLOGY

Through a wide range of dynamic and engaging activities and games, students will identify the speech organs’ positions to produce Spanish sounds, practice their pronunciation and develop an awareness of Spanish accentuation, rhythm, and intonation. Activities will favor pairs and small groups’ work to stimulate participative and cooperative learning. Extra learning materials will be given to students who want to further their pronunciation practice and knowledge.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

S1. Spanish sounds: vowels and consonants I.

S2. Spanish sounds: vowels and consonants II.

S3. Pronunciation of “ere”, “erre” and “ele”.

S4. Spelling and minimal pairs.

S5. Syllables and syllabification.

S6. Diphthongs, hiatus, and triphthongs.

S7. Spanish accent marks.

S8. Intonation: affirmative, exclamative and interrogative sentences. Emphasis, tone, and pauses.

S9. Resyllabification.

S10. Review and pronunciation games.

TEACHING TEAM

Ms. Elena Jiménez Lago

Born in Madrid (Spain), she has taught Spanish in China for five years at Soochow University and Xi’an-Jiaotong-Liverpool University.
Her experience includes teaching language, culture, and pronunciation courses to Chinese learners of Spanish.

Ms. Lujia Li

Currently pursuing a Ph.D. while teaching at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Ms. Lujia Li holds a master’s degree in research on the Spanish language at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain).
Her extensive educational background includes training in teaching Spanish pronunciation to Chinese speakers.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Hardware requirements:

  1. Laptop or desktop computer.
  2. Webcam.
  3. Microphone/headset. There are no specific requirements regarding microphones, but it is recommended to use a headset to increase the sound quality and minimize the background noise.

 

Other requirements:

  1. Current operating system (e.g., Windows 10, Mac OS X 10.7)
  2. Up-to-date internet browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari).
  3. Stable internet connection. DSL or Broadband access is recommended.
  4. Zhumu. The virtual classrooms will be hosted in the Zhumu video conferencing environment. To increase the user experience, it is recommended to download and install Zhumu on your computer (https://zhumu.com/download-intl).

Knowledge and skills

At the end of this course, students will:

  • identify the pronunciation of the basic units of Spanish and distinguish the most problematic sounds for Chinese learners of Spanish (e.g., p-b, t-d, k-g, r-l).
  • spell and syllabify (divide into syllables) Spanish words.
  • recognize and use the Spanish accent marks to facilitate reading Spanish words.
  • modulate the different types of sentences in Spanish.
  • use the emphasis, tone, pauses, and resyllabification when pronouncing basic sentences in Spanish.
  • demonstrate improvement in Spanish pronunciation in controlled situations.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted via the XJTLU online application system.

Important:

  • Application deadline: 27 June 2022.
  • Seats are limited to 30 participants. Consequently, if you are interested in this course is strongly recommended that you submit your application and make the payment as early as possible. Please note that your seat will not be reserved until you submit your application, your payment is processed, and you receive an email confirming that you have been admitted into the program.
  • If less than 10 participants register, this course might be cancelled (students will be notified by June 30th at the latest, and the reimbursement will be processed soon after).
  • Fees will not be reimbursed, except in extreme cases where participants are unable to attend the course due to serious accidents or illness.
