Overview

Applied Statistics (Biostatistics) is an important branch of statistics that concerns the use of statistical principles and methodologies to study issues and phenomena emerging in the fields of the natural and social sciences in order to infer and extrapolate from natural objects of interest . This discipline utilizes applications of mathematical statistical probability theory, methodology, and computational methods investigate, control, and explain, and analyze biometric data in order to break new grounds in medicine and biology.

In biological sciences and pharmaceutics, applied statistics are a critical element in determining whether experiment design, quality standards, production verification and manufacturing process for new drug development are appropriate and optimal. These are critically important tools for evaluating the efficacy of drugs prior to commercialization, from conducting clinical trials and evaluating drug efficacy.
As such, there is a growing demand for different levels of applied statisticians in academic medical centers, in government agencies, and in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

In concordance with the wider academic development strategy, our Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy has set up this programme, powered by the superior discipline and premium educational resources at the University of Liverpool, to provide greater support for biological medicine professionals and future biotech enterprises.

XJTLU-JITRI JOINT-SUPERVISION PATHWAY

This programme also offers XJTLU-JITRI joint supervision pathway which leverage the strength from both XJTLU and the research institutes and leading enterprises of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) to promote in-depth integration between industry, education and research. Through the unique training model integrating specialised module study, industrial research practice and dual supervision mechanism, we aim to cultivate cross-disciplinary talents who are innovative, application-oriented and with high-level international perspective.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY APPLIED STATISTICS AT XJTLU?

  • Applied statistics (biostatistics) graduates play key roles at all stages of drug development, high-level professionals are particular demand.
  • Considered one of the key projects at XJTLU within the strategic background of the “Pharmaceutical Valley of China”, an initiative outlined by local and national governments.
  • Curriculum designed closely in concordance with societal and commercial needs, combining advanced theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
  • An international academic team with profound teaching experience in applied statistics and life sciences, as well as adjunct staffs with significant background in industry.
  • Flexible study settings: 18 months for full-time students, 36 months for part-time students. Personalised study plans available for students with different backgrounds and career aspirations.
  • Strategic cooperation with over 10 well-known companies in biomedicine/pharmaceutical fields in China.
  • Located next to Suzhou Biological Nano Park and Suzhou Biomedicine Industrial Park, providing access to 400 biomedical/pharmaceutical companies that can provide extensive internship opportunities.
  • All modules are taught in English, cultivating talents with solid theoretical foundations and comprehensive skills in practice. There are broad employment prospects and opportunities for graduates.

Knowledge and skills

By the time you graduate from the MSc Applied Statistics programme, you will:

  • Obtain postgraduate-level education in mathematical and statistical principles, theories and practice;
  • Discover in-depth theoretical and practical expositions of the factors necessary for mathematical modeling and statistical analysis with emphasis on their application to pharmaceutics and clinical studies;
  • Understand how successful mathematical modeling and statistical analysis can shape and influence enhanced strategies of healthcare;
  • Uncover a profound understanding of the processes and techniques used in developing and implementing mathematical models and statistical strategies;
  • Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue further academic studies or reach senior positions e.g. statisticians, data analysts, data scientists
  • Become the statistical strategists of next-gen pharmaceutics.
Statistics collects and analyzes data from observed systems, then makes inferences and predictions to empower fact-based decision making. Future trends and shifts of global paradigms can only arise from those who analyze the data.
