The English Language Centre (ELC) exists to nurture and develop students’ engagement in high-quality academic study at XJTLU, which is an English as Medium of Instruction institution.
A Language Centre (LC) in which English for Academic Purposes, Chinese and Spanish were taught was formed in 2006, the same year as Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was established. LC has rapidly grown since that time, and with the addition of Japanese language classes in 2019 LC (then known as Languages Cluster) was split into two centres: Modern Languages Centre (MLC) and English Language Centre (ELC). These two centres now comprise the School of Languages which was launched in September 2020.
ELC continues to grow and now has a staff of more than 212 administrative and teaching staff members. Our teachers have experience teaching English at top universities and institutes from around the world and across China. The main purpose of ELC is to teach English for Academic Purposes which encompasses academic skills training, to enable students’ success at academic study in the English as Medium of Instruction institution that XJTLU is. The English Language Centre is a teaching centre and is also the largest academic unit of XJTLU. With very few exceptions, most students pass through ELC at some point in their academic career with the university.
