Letter from the President

 
As IAMCR prepares its first ever conference in mainland China, Janet Wasko, IAMCR president, discusses the expansion of teaching and research in media and communications in China and across South East Asia and the growing presence of Chinese scholars within IAMCR. These developments highlight the importance of IAMCR’s practice of rotating conference venues around the globe and our commitment to internationalizing research and debate by listening attentively to experiences and perspectives shaped by a wide range of circumstances. Reimagining the Digital Future


Preparations are well underway for IAMCR’s 2020 conference (Beijing, 12-16 July). The general call for proposals and the specific ones of the thematic sections and working groups have been distributed. The deadline to submit proposals online is 10 February. Keynote speakers have been invited (more details coming soon) and the local organisers at Tsinghua University and XJTLU have been working hard to get many things in place before the Chinese New Year holiday, which this year falls on 25 January.

Travel grants for Beijing 2020


Twenty five travel grants worth up to US$1,500 each will be made available to early-stage scholars, who are members of IAMCR in good standing, reside in low and middle income countries and have papers accepted for presentation at our upcoming conference in Beijing. IAMCR 2020 pre-conferences


Pre-conferences will be held at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. They will be held on 10 or 11 July, or on both days in the event of a two-day event. They can be organised by individual or institutional IAMCR members alone or in partnership with others. The deadline to request a pre-conference is 10 February. XJTLU will fund 50 grants for up to 2,500 RMB (approximately USD 350) to pre-conference participants to contribute to the cost of travel between Suzhou and the main conference location in Beijing, plus local travel and accommodation costs. Grants will be awarded based on the IAMCR criteria for travel grants. Learn more about the pre-conference grants >>

Awards for Beijing 2020


The IAMCR award in memory of Dallas Smythe and the Urban Communication Research Grant will be awarded in Beijing. The Dallas Smythe Award is for a paper accepted for presentation at the conference, while the Urban Communication Grant is for research in progress. 

Time to renew your membership


A new year is always a good time to make a list and start crossing things off. If you haven't already renewed your membership, we suggest you put "renew my IAMCR membership" on your todo list and cross it off right away by clicking on the link of the membership renewal message you received recently. If you haven't seen the renewal message, send us an email and Valeria will send the link. The renewal message included a letter from Janet Wasko, IAMCR president, about our achievements in 2019 and plans for 2020.

If you are a representative of an institutional member, you can login to your account and select My membership from the menu to see if your institution's membership has been renewed. While you are logged in, you can also see a list of your institution’s representatives, including the administrator, who is the person who renews the membership.

Membership fees provide us with the majority of our operating income and your support is vital to the continuing health of the organization. If you have already renewed, thank you!
 

Elections 2020


IAMCR conducts elections for its Executive Board and 15 International Council members every four years. 2020 will be the second time IAMCR members vote electronically. Because many IAMCR members are not familiar with the IAMCR governance structure, the Election Committee is preparing a series of three pre-election letters to explain IAMCR’s structure and electoral process. Read more >>

Communication for Development grants awarded


Cristina Gallegos and Jharna Brahma have been awarded research grants from the UNICEF/IAMCR Communication for Development Research Fund to support research that seeks to advance our understanding of how Communication for Development contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Read more >>


Awards at IAMCR 2019

Several award ceremonies were made at IAMCR 2019 to recognise the achievements of some of our members:

  • The 2019 New Directions for Climate Communication Research Fellowship was awarded to John Cook, Emily Vraga, and Sojung Kim for their proposal “Countering Climate Misinformation with Humor and Active Inoculation”.
  • The 2019 Award in Memory of Herbert I. Schiller was presented to Pooja Ichplani, Archna Kumar, Rupa Upadhyay and Jessica Mayberry, for their joint paper “Communication Processes, Community Mobilization and Normative Shifts: Learnings from Video Volunteers’ India Unheard Program”.
  • Professor Helena Sousa, a long-time member and supporter of IAMCR, was presented with a Distinguished Contribution Award. Helena is a member of the International Council, chair of the Membership Committee and was head of the Local Organising Committee for IAMCR's 2010 Conference in Braga.
  • The 2019 Urban Communication Research Grant was awarded to Arlene Fernandez (University of Pennsylvania) for her project “Meet Me at the Papi Store: Space, Place, and the ‘American Dream’ in Philadelphia Corner Stores”. Erika Polson received an honorary mention.

IAMCR 2019 Roundup


1,785 participants at IAMCR 2019

With 1,785 registered participants from 83 countries and 5 continents, IAMCR 2019 was our largest conference ever. Women accounted for 59% of the 2019 participants and students, who participate fully in IAMCR conferences, accounted for 28% of participants. See the list of the countries where participants came from. 


IAMCR 2019 survey results

Following each annual conference, IAMCR conducts an online survey of participants to evaluate how we did and to learn how to make future conferences better. 1,766 participants were invited to complete the survey for the 2019 conference and 53% responded. Respondents came from 73 of the 83 countries represented at the conference. Read more >>

IAMCR Statement on Chile

In November IAMCR issued a statement in solidarity with journalists and news outlets working to provide coverage of the current crisis in Chile in a way that allows the reasons for the protests to be understood, gives voice to peaceful protesters, and documents abuses by the military and police anti-riot squads. Read more >>

This text of this statement was drafted by the Clearinghouse for Public Statements.The Clearinghouse processes statements and/or manages the process of signing statements generated by others, that are principally concerned with issues relating to media/communications and where IAMCR members have substantive scientific expertise that provides a basis for seeking to influence discursive or material practice.
 

Digital Archive

IAMCR has embarked on a project to scan and make available online the most essential documents from IAMCR's history. This digital archive includes links to all circular letters sent by the presidents of the association from 1965 to 1990 and the printed newsletters produced since 1990. Also available are the first two printed bulletins from 1959 and 1960. Read more >>
 

Conference Accessibility Guidelines

Issues of accessibility of academic conferences for participants with disabilities have become more visible and imperative in recent years. An IAMCR working group has now embarked on a project to establish accessibility guidelines for the association's conferences. Gerard Goggin tells us more >>

 

Welcome new Ambassadors

The IAMCR Executive Board extend a very warm welcome to our four newly appointed ambassadors: Gemma Lopez, based in Santa Clara California, Leah Komen at Daystar University in Kenya, Rodrigo Cetina Presuel at the Harvard Law School and Anna Gladkova at Lomonosov Moscow State University. An IAMCR Ambassadors' Group on Facebook has been setup as a space where ambassadors can post information on their activities for the wider IAMCR membership. Read more >>

The Communication Policy and Technology Section has announced the winners of its 2019 best paper award and the CPT/Internet Policy Review award. Congratulations to Ana Pop Stefanija, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), Sora Kim, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Sabine Einwiller, University of Vienna (Austria). Read more >>

Setting the Gender Agenda

Published by UNESCO in collaboration with IAMCR and the Global Alliance for Media and Gender, "Setting the Gender Agenda for Communication Policy: New proposals from the Global Alliance on Media and Gender" was launched at the recent IAMCR conference in Madrid.
 

Political Economy journal

Vol 7, No 1 of the Political Economy of Communication journal is now available online. The journal of IAMCR's Political Economy Section is free and open access.

New book in IAMCR/ Palgrave series 


The Science of the Commons: A Note on Communication Methodology, by Muniz Sodré, is the ninth book to be published in the Palgrave/IAMCR book series Global Transformations in Media and Communication Research.
