Feedback and the roles and responsibilities of chairs, discussants, respondents and authors

Feedback

All IAMCR members are invited and encouraged to provide feedback to authors in the form of observations or questions left as comments on papers.

When it comes to feedback, there are a few things to keep in mind for all participants:

  • It should use the CCC feedback principle: Feedback should be Constructive, Courteous and Critical.
  • Feedback does not need to be extensive. It may consist out of a few lines, e.g., giving one good suggestion, or it could be a longer set of comments. This is up to the chair/respondent/discussant/attendee to decide for themselves.
  • Feedback might trigger dialogue. Authors are welcome to respond to feedback, and to the discussion chair and the respondent are invited to further engage.

Roles and responsibilities of chairs, discussants, respondents and authors

Section and Working Group (S/WG) heads must ensure that chairs, discussants and respondents are aware of their roles and responsibilities and to make sure they are aware of the information/guidelines on this page.

Chairs

Each Online Paper Panel has been allocated one or more chair(s) with the following responsibilities:

  1. Provide brief feedback to each paper and/or to the panel as a whole
  2. Motivate discussants/respondents and "authors" to provide feedback on the papers
  3. Seek to ensure that feedback follows the CCC principle: Constructive, Courteous and Critical

Discussants and Respondents

IAMCR's sections and working groups use discussants and respondents in four different ways:

  1. Assign a single discussant to each panel. Discussants assigned to a panel are invited to comment on the panel as a whole, including comments that address each of the papers in the panel. An initial comment should be made soon after the publication of the papers. Follow-up comments during the week of the conference and and until 12 September are welcome and encouraged.
  2. Assign a respondent to each paper within the session (normally selected from the other members of the panel itself). Respondents assigned to a paper are requested to provide feedback via the discussion platform during the week of 11-15 July. An initial comment should be made soon after the publication of the papers. Follow-up comments during the week of the conference and until 12 September are welcome and encouraged.
  3. Assign both discussants and respondents
  4. Do not assign discussants or respondents but expect the chair to assume the role of discussant as well as chair

The decision about which method to use was up to the heads of each section or working group.

Authors

Authors are expected to respond to engage with questions and observations on their papers. They are also expected to read the other papers in their sessions and to contribute feedback to their colleagues.


Online Conference Papers will remain online until 12 September. Authors, chairs, discussants and respondents are requested to periodically checkin to see if new dialogue may have developed.
